Did you realize that the “Great Divide” or as it is sometimes referred to as the ” Continental Divide” or even as the “St. Lawrence Divide” runs parallel to Lynx Lake Road? Just south of the boat landing by the gate leading into Dairymen’s there is a ridge that can clearly be seen from the road, especially in the early spring and in the winter. This ridge forms part of the ” Great Divide”. The run off on the southern side of that ridge eventually winds up in the Mississippi River and on to the Gulf of Mexico. The run off on the northern side winds up in Lake Superior and eventually to the St. Lawerence River, hence the name “St Lawrence Divide”. This ridge is one of the highest points in Vilas County at 1780ft above sea level.
Red Bass Lake elevation is approximately of 1701 ft. above sea level making it the lake with the highest elevation in Presque Isle Township and Lynx Lake with an elevation of 1698 ft. above sea level is the second highest. We might say that living on Red Bass Lake or Lynx Lake is “the pinnacle” of Presque Isle!
