Friends of Lynx Lake,

As I write this there are snow flurries and a briskness in the air. The wind is coming from the north swirling past the point and creating whitecaps in my bay. If not for the daffodils with their bright yellow and orange helmets standing at attention in my yard, one might think winter and not spring was on its way. The birds at my feeders and the maples new red buds offer further reassurance that soon the hummingbirds will replace the snow, and Lynx Lake as it always does, will fully awake from its winter slumber. The shores will once again be filled with life. Docks and boats will go in. Lights from cabins will once again be seen and the drone of a distant outboard motor and the call of the loon will fill the night.

Hopefully, this year we all will feel a new degree of normalcy as Covid slowly recedes and loosens its grip just as the ice does each spring on the Lake. I look forward to meeting in person with our new neighbors and old friends on the Lake and resuming our annual meeting. Yes, we will have a Property Owners Meeting this year. The Board has decided, however, that it is prudent to delay the meeting until Labor Day Weekend. We apologize if this will be an inconvenience, but the delay will give us a greater degree of comfort in safety protocols which are constantly evolving. The Bunce Family have graciously offered to serve as this year’s host. I would like to thank them in advance for their hospitality. We will be providing you with greater details once a time and agenda have been finalized.

Now for some news around the Lake………..

This year the ice left the Lake very early on April 4, and the Lake level looks to be normal for this time of year. Bill Cerny and Susan Fabera have  been working closely with the DNR monitoring the Lake’s water level weekly for the past several years. Combined with our ongoing testing of the Lake’s water chemistry, we are now beginning to get a very accurate profile of the Lake’s water depth and quality.  I can safely say that Lynx Lake remains one of the healthiest lakes in Vilas County and perhaps Wisconsin as well. As I am sure you must agree, our goal is to keep it that way.

There have been six new families that have joined our Lake community since our last homeowners meeting, as well as two new loon families, one Canadian geese family, and numerous duck families. I was hoping the two swans I saw circling the Lake on several occasions would take up residence, but they have apparently moved on. Our recent stocking of walleyes has yielded some results through the ice this winter. Hopefully, the summer walleye fishing will improve as well. Our new sign board at the boat landing will be finished soon and we will update the fishing and Town boating regulations accordingly. I recommend that you familiarize yourself and your guests with them. These Town ordinances can also be found at https://piwi.us. The rules and regulations regarding watercraft use are established by the Town and not our Lake Association. As I have noted on several occasions, the Lake Association is not the “Lake Police”. The Town does have a Town Constable should the need arise.

The mailboxes at the end of Lynx Lake Rd have continued to grow. There is no room left on the original structure which is now littered with old rusting and dilapidated mailboxes, most of which have not been in use for years. Now, without risk of committing a federal crime, I am asking that if you have a mailbox redundancy, or if you have purchased a home and the former owners unused mailbox remains, please remove it. This will allow for larger mail mailboxes and reduce the clutter.

We have made efforts to update and improve our website at www.lynxlakepi.com. If you haven’t taken the time to look at it lately, I think you will be pleasantly surprised by the amount of information you can find there. Also, if you are new to the Lake, our website has archived all previous correspondence so you can get a quick history lesson as to what has transpired around the Lake. We have recently added a new feature to our website entitled Tribute Gifts. A tax free donation to the Lynx Lake Foundation can now be made as a tribute gift in either the memory of someone, or to honor someone involved with the Lake. The funds collected through Tribute Gifts will go to the Lynx Lake Foundation to help sustain our ongoing efforts. We will be talking more about Tribute Gifts and the direction of The Foundation at our annual meeting.

I realize that our collection efforts relative to the annual dues has been less than stunning. We will try to get that back on track as we once again will be having our annual meeting this September. The suggested annual dues are $25.00 for an individual and $50.00 for a family. Dues are not a requirement to attend the annual meeting, but they are required to vote. I bring this up only because my term as President, as well as most of the board, has basically expired. Last year was too confusing to address a vote and  field nominations. That can was kicked down the road, but we will need to address this at the September meeting. I will gladly continue in my current role as long as need be until we have an opportunity to formally meet again.

We will be sending out reminder postcards, as well as posting on our website, the details of our annual meeting as they become more clarified. Please do your best to attend as we have a lot of information to share and new friends to meet.

As always see you on the Lake,

Gary Gruca
