Vilas County Broadband Survey

Posted May 25, 2021 by Fritz Behr in Uncategorized / 0 Comments

I received the following as a representative of the Presque Isle Town Lake Association and was asked to forward to the Lake Association membership – Fritz.

Some of you may be aware that Boulder Junction is currently improving internet broadband access to all its citizens and businesses. The Town of Presque Isle is in the planning process of a similar project working with Vilas County and internet service providers. The Town has asked us to distribute a survey from the Vilas County Economic Development Corporation (VCEDC) to our members to assist in this effort. Below you will find an explanation from the Town and a link to the survey. Please take the time to read this message and respond to the survey

Hello Fellow Presque Isle Residents/Property Owners,

My name is Paul Specht and I am writing you on behalf of the Presque Isle Broadband Enhancement Workgroup. Attached you will find a Broadband Survey created by the Vilas County Economic Development Committee (VCEDC). The Survey is meant to gather information to assist in efforts to develop a detailed map of accurate broadband availability and coverage throughout Vilas County. The resulting map and underlining information will then be shared with Townships within the County to help with their efforts to find, and work with, service providers to enhance the level of broadband services available to their residents, businesses, and other property owners. Towns throughout the County have been asked to support the distribution of this Survey to make sure it reaches as many households and businesses within the County as possible.

To that end, the Presque Isle Broadband Enhancement Workgroup is teaming with lake associations, civic groups and other Town organizations with the ability to reach out to their members via email to deliver the Survey. A link to the Survey can be found in the message from the VCEDC attached below. We ask that you please complete and submit the Survey as soon as possible. Also, please consider sharing this communication with your neighbors and friends. We are doing our best to reach everyone we can but simply do not have access to email addresses to everyone using and depending on broadband living and/or owning property in Presque Isle Township.

A couple more things. Some of you may receive multiple requests to fill out this Survey reason being you are associated with more than one of the associations or organizations we have asked to distribute the Survey. We ask that if you do receive multiple requests, please only complete and submit the Survey once.

Also, one of an early questions in the Survey asks, “Is high speed internet currently available at this address?” High speed internet in this context is 25Mbps download and 3Mbps upload speed or better and available to the home terrestrially via direct wire. Satellite service should not be considered when answering this question. The next question provides guidance on how to determine your internet speed if you do not know what it is. If you know you have chosen to purchase a level of service less than what is available to your address to save money, to avoid new equipment charges or for any other reason, please report the fastest speed available to you.

Thank you in advance for assisting us in this endeavor.

Paul

Vilas County Economic Development Broadband Survey

Improved broadband is essential for a robust tourism industry and to diversify and grow Vilas County’s economy to attract entrepreneurs, remote workers, and expanding businesses.

To evolve and strengthen Vilas County’s economy, the Vilas County Economic Development Corporation (VCEDC) is focused on making Vilas County a broadband destination by working with the municipalities, Lac du Flambeau Tribe, Internet Service Providers, and County leadership to provide education, leadership, planning, support, and networking.

The VCEDC Broadband Workgroup is pleased to launch a county-wide survey to help us develop a detailed map of accurate broadband availability and coverage. This map will be used as a baseline to identify areas where broadband needs to be improved, provide accurate data for future grant applications and track progress of availability over time.

What kinds of information are we looking for?

  • Do you have internet, and if so, what are your speeds?
  • Do you have internet but it is not installed?
  • Are you a resident or seasonal homeowner?
  • What town do you reside in?

The survey will take less than 10 minutes to complete. Please share this survey with your colleagues, friends and family who reside in Vilas County.

Thank you!
